Types of DSL Internet Connections

DSL Internet

There are many types of DSL Internet connections available in most zip codes. ADSL, ADSL 2+ VDSL, SDSL, SHDSL and HDSL among others.

DSL Internet came about when telephone companies found out they could offer Internet over telephone lines, the very same copper phone lines they already had coming in to most of the houses in America. This made DSL Internet connection availble to most of America.

The two major "types" of DSL Internet are ADSL and SDSL. Originally most DSL was ADSL, which means a Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. This means that the signal is more going down than up. This is useable since most Internet use, especially in the past, was downloading things from the world wide web. This is still the type of DSL available to most people.

Now SDSL, or Symmetric DSL is becoming popular. SDSL means upload speed is equal to download speed. This is needed now because people are uploading a lot more than they used to and playing inline games. People are uploading video and other files much more now.

It is important to find DSL Internet in your zipcode. That way you know what options are available to you.

Connect America Funding for Internet Providers

Last year the Federal Government gave millions of dollars to telecommunications companies to improve the high speed Internet connection to rural zip codes. The money was first set aside after the mortgage collapse of 2008. It was part of the stimulation package. The idea is to give the telecos money so that they can build out Internet connections to areas under served with Internet. Then they can charge their new customers lots of money and pay their executive even more money.

Most of the major players in telecom are getting a pretty big slice of the pie. AT&T is getting something like $427 million in Connect America Funds to build out America's broadband.

Some of the top recipients of Connect America Funding are

Telephone, Internet and video provider AT&T gets about $427 million annually so that AT&T provides broadband to 2.2 million locationsin 18 states

CenturyLink accepts $500 million from Connect America, helping Frontier provide high-speed Internet to locations in 33 states. Over a million househols and businesses all told and over half have speeds of 20 Mbps or more.

Frontier provides phone, Internet and other services mostly in Texas, California and Florida. They are getting almost $300 million a year from Connect America. They reported that they now provide 331,000 small businesses broadband as a result of the program. THey have also improved speeds to 875,000 homes and businesses.

DSL in America

The DSL, or digital line subscriber Internet available to you is a relativley old technology. It was popularized right after the spread of dial up Internet. But it has stood up pretty well. DSL has stood the test of time pretty well with advances in the technology allowing the speeds available to Internet customers to increase over time.

Most consumers can get high speed DSL Internet where they live. Often DSL Internet uses a mix of fiber optic cables and copper cables. More and more Internet providers are relying on high speed fiber optic cable to augment DSL lines.

DSL Internet in your area is probably provided by companies that started out as telephone companies like AT&T, CenturyLink, and Frontier as well as the king of dial-up Internet: Earthlink.

DSL developed after it was figured out that high speed Internet connections could be delivered using the same lines already coming into the majority of homes in America. Thats right, now they know that high-speed DSL Internet is available to zip codes all across America using phone lines! That is why many of the DSL Internet providers got their start as telephone companies. Actually many of them can trace their heritage back to Alexander Graham Bell.
